After a period of meditation, once the mind is quiet and empty, a circle, the enso, is drawn on the final exhaled breath. This moving meditation is part of the Zen tradition. The stillness of the mind and the rhythm of the breath are expressed through a gesture of the hand. This gesture creates a visual articulation of the out-breath. The enso represents everything and nothing; the universe and the void. Using light-sensitive paper with photographic chemicals expands on the impermanence, imperfection and simplicity that are inherent to the nature of the process.
